A WILMSLOW convenience store which looked set to close is to rebrand as a Co-op.

My Local, on Water Lane, was one of 125 stores nationwide which faced the axe when owners MLCG Limited group entered administration in June.

Over 90 stores have since closed, but the Wilmslow branch will remain as one of eight purchased by the Co-op.

My Local was forced to make several of its 1,658 employees redundant following the closures, but staff at the eight branches obtained by the Co-op will be transferred under the new ownership.

Steve Murrells, Chief Executive – Retail at Co-op Food, said: “The Co-op Food business is moving forwards with a clear purpose and momentum, delivering a compelling, convenient and co-operative shopping experience for millions of shoppers each day.

“Our acquisitions programme is fundamental to the success of this strategy. In the last two years we have opened close to 200 new stores, and in 2016 the Co-op is actively pursuing 100 new stores as well as carrying out refits in a further 150.

“The acquisition of eight My Local stores supports our focus on convenience store retailing and adds to a portfolio that offers the right range in the right location.”

The Water Lane branch opened as M Local in August 2011, run by supermarket chain Morrison’s, before rebranding to My Local four years later.

The company entered administration having faced tough trading conditions following a change of ownership in October 2015.

Administrators KPMG confirmed last month that the store would close if a buyer could not be found.

The Co-op had initially purchased six My Local branches, including stores in Stockport and Widnes, before adding sites in Wilmslow and Ilkley, West Yorkshire, for an undisclosed fee.

The transactions are subject to approval from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
