A WILMSLOW beekeeping group is calling for volunteers to help slow the decline of honey bees in the area.

BeeEducated, which is based at the Wilmslow Animal Sanctuary, is desperate for people to help out with beekeeping, gardening, feeding the bees and fundraising for the group.

Volunteers would be needed for around three hours a week, and would need to be committed to their role.

Ian Johnson, BeeEducated’s apiary manager, said: “I have been keeping bees for a while and it costs a bomb.

“We’ve got some grants and we’ve been able to get equipment and swarms in Wilmslow. We’ve got about 10 hives at the minute.

“We have groups to look after the bees but in in the summer we are having to make more food for them because the crops have been poor this year.

“Bees are declining and so we need someone who is committed to make sure that the colony they’re responsible for is looked after.”
