GRANDPARENTS often do not get the recognition they deserve for all the little things they do for us every, day but here at the Guardian we think it is time that changed.

Ahead of Grandparents’ Day on Sunday, we are launching a search for the town’s best grandparents in order to give them a well-deserved treat.

And the timing could not be better, as latest research says grandparents have been regularly coming to the rescue during school holidays.

The poll of more than 8,000 over-50s shows that one in eight grandparents looked after grandchildren once a week over the summer break, while a further one in eight will be on child minding duties twice a week, according to statistics from Saga Car Insurance.

The winners of our competition will pick up a £50 hamper each from the new Asda in Northwich.

All you have to do to enter is send us a picture of your grandma or granddad (or the two together) with a short explanation of why they are simply the best.

Please include your name, address and phone number, as well as your grandparents’ full names, ages and address.

Entries can be sent in via our Facebook page or e-mail them to hannah.bargery@nqnw.co.uk.

The competition is open to anyone who is a grandparent and lives within the Knutsford or Wilmslow area.

Deadline for entries is October 14.
