A STRAY typewriter caused a section of Wilmslow town centre to be closed by police this morning.
Cheshire Police was alerted to a reported ‘suspicious package’ in an alleyway next to the Card Factory shop in Grove Street at 9.16am.
Officers attended the scene and assessed the package, placing a 50 metre cordon in place to close Grove Street.
Cheshire Police told residents they were “dealing with an incident in Grove Street” on Facebook and Twitter at 9.54am.
Once establishing the package was a typewriter, and not suspicious, police reopened the street at approximately 10.30am and thanked residents for their patience on social media.
Stephanie Wilson was working at Card Factory at the time of the incident.
She told the Guardian: “It was someone from across the road who told us about it first, and that they were going to call the police about it.
“We really didn’t think there was anything to it until the police turned up and started investigating it.
“They came into the shop, told us they had closed the road and that we should leave the shop, but in the end it was just a typewriter.
“It certainly wasn’t your regular morning in work.”
