WORK has begun on restoring and rebuilding Wilmslow's famous pipe organ.

St Bartholomew's in Wilmslow launched a campaign at the beginning of 2015 to raise £250,000 for the restoration of its pipe organ 'Oscar the Organ'.

Work on the new organ is currently taking place at York Pipe Organs in Yorkshire.

Oscar, which celebrates its 150th birthday this year, will be refurbished and then reinstalled at the church later this year.

Organist Philip Underwood told the Guardian that the restored organ would present 'great value for money' for parishioners and the town.

"Modern day organ builders have developed new methods and techniques and where as this one lasted 150 years the new one should last 250 years," he said.

"When you cost that it means we would pay out £250,000 for something that lasts 250 years, so £1,000 a year. If you bought an electronic one it is no different from any electrical piece of equipment and a good one costs £10,000.

"How many times would you have to replace the electronic one in 250 years?

"We are going to get better value for money doing this with the pipe organ rather than electronic and you can also tell the difference between the two.

"I am very proud to think that we are supporting British craftsmen and their families in these uncertain time by undertaking the renovation of the 150 year old pipe organ. The project will provide work for a least nine months."

The old Oscar will continue to play at St Bart's until Easter before a temporary small pipe organ will be installed until the new Oscar arrives in the Autumn.

Philip added that although the sponsorship mark had been reached any further donations would be gratefully received.

"The flight deck will be in a great position in the church - it cost £30,000 - and if anyone would like to sponsor that then it would be great," he said.

"It will be a very visible thing for people to see in the church."
