President Bernice Lord of the Inner Wheel Club of Alderley Edge and Bollin Valley welcomed members and guests from surrounding clubs to the International Evening.

A colour scheme of black, yellow and red was chosen to denote the colours of the Ugandan flag – black representing the African people, yellow sunshine and vitality and red the African brotherhood.

Clare Ramsden from the Mary Wood Trust gave an interesting talk on how her mother set up this small charity in 2002, which has been continued by its Trustees since the death of Mary Wood in 2008.

The charity works to provide sponsorship for education for disadvantaged young people, especially girls, in rural south west Uganda as well as to develop facilities at Nyakabungo Girls’ Secondary School and Ruth Memorial School.

To make it a truly international evening, members of the Inner Wheel put together several hampers of Italian and French items for the raffle which raised a considerable sum for the work of the Mary Wood Charity.

The next International event is a Millinery Evening at Hoopers of Wilmslow.
