A HUSTINGS event at Wilmslow High School has been cancelled in the wake of the Manchester attack.

The five candidates battling to become Tatton MP were due to go head to head at the school in Holly Road at 6.30pm this evening, Wednesday.

Following the attack at the Manchester Arena on Monday, which left 22 dead and many more injured, national campaigning has been suspended ahead of the General Election.

A Wilmslow High School spokesman said: “We are disappointed to confirm that due to the national suspension of campaigning not all five candidates could be represented at this evening’s hustings, and therefore, we have taken the decision to cancel this event.

"We explore whether it will be possible to rearrange for a future date.”

The news follows the Guardian's announcement that a further hustings event set to take place at Knutsford Academy on Friday, May 26, has also been cancelled.

The Guardian is in the process of arranging a Facebook 'Live' debate - involving all five candidates - for next week.

Esther McVey of the Conservatives, Labour's Sam Rushworth, Lib Dem Gareth Wilson, Green Nigel Hennerley and independent candidate Quentin Abel are on the ballot for the election on June 8.
