ALMOST half of drivers broke the speed limit on a 30mph Alderley Edge road last month – including seven who travelled at more than 70mph.

Fresh data from the parish council’s speed indicator device shows that 116,471 vehicles travelled northbound past the device opposite Woodlands Court, in Congleton Road, during April.

Of those vehicles, 48 per cent travelled above the speed limit, while only 46 per cent of drivers travelled at or below 30mph.

Fifty-two drivers travelled at 60mph or faster, while the highest speed recorded was 73mph.

Cllr Craig Browne, Cheshire East Council member for Alderley Edge, analysed the data and believes the headline figures are ‘concerning’.

“The community speed watch team is doing what it can to help, and it is looking for more volunteers,” he told the Guardian.

“We’re also looking at more traffic calming measures for the village, although this is going to be some way in the future as funds allow.”

The figures also show that more vehicles passed the device at noon than any other time of day, with 8,992 passing the device at that time.
