A GROUP of parents are gearing up to tackle the biggest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales within just 24 hours.

Members of Ashdene PTA will take on the Three Peaks Challenge on Saturday, July 8, and Sunday, July 9, tackling Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon.

It is the second time in five years that Ashdene parents will take on the challenge, after raising more than £6,000 for both the PTA and Action Aid in 2012.

This time all funds raised will be split between the school and the Seashell Trust, and Neil Hughes, from Ashdene PTA, told the Guardian that he'd be delighted to see a similar amount raised for two 'worthy causes'.

"Everyone has their own reasons for doing it – it's on a few people's bucket lists, and some people are looking to prove themselves," he said.

"A few of us also are doing it again after 2012. Last time I had just done a half-marathon, and I was in training for a full marathon, so I had pretty reasonable fitness.

"But I'm not in the same position this time, and there are a few younger ones with hipster beards who are probably more up to the challenge."

The money raised for Ashdene will go towards buying interactive white boards in every classroom, upgrading the school's computer system, and for resurfacing, fencing and new equipment for the playgrounds.

Meanwhile, the Seashell Trust provides a secure environment for children and young adults with severe learning disabilities and communication needs.

Neil added: "Ashdene PTA is an extremely active PTA that is an integral part of the school community, responsible for fundraising and organising social events.

"In the main, the PTA funds are used for the ‘extras’ not provided by the school budget that make our children’s learning experiences so much more fulfilling and exciting."
