HORTICULTURAL fans will descend on SK9 next weekend as Wilmslow Wells for Africa’s Open Gardens day returns.

The event will take place on Saturday, June 24, with 19 gardens in Wilmslow, Handforth and Alderley Edge opening their gates to boast wildlife havens, restful gardens, vegetable plots and even a miniature train.

One of the gardeners to feature will be Bill Woods, of Nursery Lane, whose garden features roaming perennials and wild flowers, as well as two greenhouses and a herb garden.

“I certainly am looking forward to it, although last minute weather extremes are always a challenge to gardeners,” he told the Guardian.

“The recent high winds have caused damage to some of the more delicate plants in the garden. Luckily though at this time of year things generally recover quickly.

“On the day it’s great to meet other gardeners and exchange comments and ideas.

“It’s always good to learn their experiences with growing particular plants and to hear their growing tips.”

Wilmslow Wells for Africa has been working to provide sources of clean water in rural African communities for more than 30 years.

Open Gardens will run from 10.30am to 4.30pm on Saturday, June 24, across SK9 – and lunch will be available at the St John’s Church Rooms, in Knutsford Road, from 11.30am to 2.30pm.

Entry costs £12 on the day, or £10 in advance, and tickets can be bought at wilmslowwells.org
