HUNDREDS turned out in soaring temperatures as the Mobberley Rose Queen festival returned for 2017.

A regular fixture in the village calendar since 1922, villagers and visitors lined the streets to see the annual parade on Saturday, June 17, before Maisie Purcell was crowned the new Rose Queen.

Lorraine Henshaw, from the Rose Queen committee, was delighted with how the day unfolded.

“It was brilliant – the weather was boiling and we had a fantastic day,” she told the Guardian.

"All the kids looked fantastic, the costumes were gorgeous and lots of effort went into the day.

"The fancy dress competition was won by Messy Church for the third year running, but everybody really upped their game this year."

The event marked the end of 11 months' hard work for the organising committee, which is already looking ahead to next year's show.

But seeing the smiles on so many faces in the village makes the graft all worthwhile for Lorraine.

"What's really important about the event is that it is truly for everyone," she added.

"All the children take part in the parade, their parents and grandparents come down to cheer them on – the Rose Queen's family even came down from Scotland to see it.

"We probably had about two-thirds of the village out for it, and people in the pubs popped out to see what was going on too.

"It's one of the biggest days in the village calendar every year and so many people come down to enjoy it.

"We will rest for about a month and then we will have our first meeting about next year's event, and we can start thinking about how we will do it all again."
