AN 84-year old Flixton woman is set to represent Blind Veterans UK, as part of the Urmston Choral Society.

Alma Burrows, who is almost completely blind, is set to join other members of the Urmston Choral Society for their free concert at St. John's Church in Irlam Road, Flixton on Wednesday, July 12, which occurs during Flixton Folk Festival Week.

As a token of her gratitude for all the kindness, care and practical assistance given to her by Blind Veterans UK, the choir agreed to help Alma in her appeal to raise much-needed funds to carry on the charity’s valuable work assisting blind ex-service people.

Alma, who joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force when she was 17 and left in 1952, said: "Joining Urmston Choral Society around 10 years ago practically saved me after losing my beloved husband.

"I really enjoy being with all the choir members who I now count as valuable friends and I particularly love carrying out my role as pastoral secretary, welcoming new recruits.

"Due to my blindness, my life would be severely limited if it were not for the practical and emotional support from Blind Veterans UK."

Alma, who is also known as Marion, is an ambassador for Henshaws Society for Bind People after starting to suffer from age related macular degeneration seven years ago, meaning she now has to memorise most of the choir's songs, as well as having specially adapted pieces written for her so she can continue to sing.

As the event is free, tickets will be on a first come, first served basis and those wishing to attend are urged to arrive early with the café-style event starting at 7.30pm.

Members of the Women's Institute will also be providing refreshments.

The Flixton Folk Festival Week runs from July 8 to 16.
