FORMER retail manager Laura Mealin has swapped a job at one of the UK’s busiest airports for a role caring for the Cheshire countryside.

Laura headed 220 miles north to become a volunteer ranger at Quarry Bank in Wilmslow.

“It is so satisfying to be playing a vital role in managing this beautiful environment for everyone to enjoy,” she said.

Laura, who is 37, had long dreamed of a life outdoors, and volunteering with the National Trust offered her that chance.

After 20 years in retail she decided to up sticks and head for Cheshire, where she has been busy repairing paths, building gates and maintaining the countryside for the benefit of visitors and wildlife.

One of her favourite tasks so far has been conducting an otter survey while being serenaded by songbirds.

“It is certainly very different to working in retail, and I thoroughly enjoy it,” she said.

After just six months her work experience and new-found talents have paid off, as she has secured a full-time role as a ranger in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

For anyone planning a similar life-changing move she has this advice.

“You do need to have courage and need to be responsible and plan your move well,” she said.

“It is a brave step to take, but it is one that could definitely be worth it.”
