Frustrated Wilmslow residents 'inundate' Facebook with roadworks complaints

Cllr Ferguson addressed his frustrations to Cheshire East highways officers at a town council meeting, where the officers spoke about highway issues in the town.

“I believe Facebook has been inundated with the problems of people not being able to get anywhere in Wilmslow because of all the roadworks happening at the same time," he said.

“There appears to lay people like myself that there is no co-ordination at all.

“We have a problem from the airport tunnels where there are roadworks.

“There are roadworks at Hawthorn Lane – we had a problem at Swan Street – you could not get out of Wilmslow through Handforth because of roadworks there.

“There were roadworks at Heald Green, so you could not get through Heald Green.

“The bypass has roadworks saying - a single lane between 9.30 and 3.30. At some point there was no way in or out of Wilmslow.

“From the Texaco garage last Wednesday to the traffic lights in the centre of Wilmslow took me 40 minutes because of Hawthorn Lane being closed and various other closures.

“The road was also closed between the A34 and Handforth. There was no way out. If there is no way out there is also no way in. It is really causing a problem.”

Town council chairman councillor Martin Watkins said: “The question about the utilities down Styal Road and the ones that are coming through to Alderley Edge is the subject of considerable disquiet in this town.

“I would think there is no bigger complaint going on about highways at the moment than these works.

“The comments being made are laying all the complaints at the door of Cheshire East and that it didn’t do timely planning for this work.”

Homes and business in Wilmslow, Handforth, Chelford and Alderley are set to benefit from a £1.7 million upgrade to the local power network.

Engineers from Electricity North West are replacing five kilometres of underground electricity cables between Alderley and Wilmslow.
