WILMSLOW Quakers are inviting people to a free screening on October 26 of the award-winning film I, Daniel Blake.

The film will be shown at the Meeting House at 1a Bourne Street, Wilmslow, where people are also invited to drop in next weekend to find out more about The Quakers.

“Most people have heard of Quaker Oats – but why are they called that - or why is Pennsylvania so called?” said local Quaker Andrew Backhouse.

“Every now and then you read something about peace work, and Quakers seem to be involved.

“Quakers have been around for 365 years, but seem to be a very quiet group. They meet every Sunday for a silence-based meeting for worship – and what is all that about?

“For a change Quakers have organised a day to find out about Quakers, to meet some of them, to ask questions.

“Come along on Saturday, October 21 from 10.30am to 3.30pm, including lunch, if you fancy finding out more.

“So many people seem to discover us and say ‘where have you been all this time?’ and ‘why do you not promote yourselves?’, so we hope this is a chance for more people to find out about us.”

Child care can be available – call Andrew on 01625 537087 if you might appreciate that.

On Thursday, October 26, from 7.15pm to 9pm, the Meeting House is screening the award-winning and critically-lauded Ken Loach film I, Daniel Blake.

Daniel Blake has worked as a joiner for most of his life in Newcastle. Now, for the first time ever he needs help from the state.

He crosses paths with single mother Katie who is battling to keep her two children fed.

Daniel and Katie find themselves in a no-man's land, striving to pull themselves out of the welfare bureaucracy of modern day Britain.

The film won the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

Doors open at 6.45pm, and the film starts at 7.15pm.

You can book your free tickets by calling Pat Baker on 01625 528997 and reserving your place, or via Eventbrite - see link below - where you can print off a ticket and bring on the night.
