LANE closures are to be introduced in the centre of Wilmslow from Saturday for two weeks as part of work to upgrade the town’s power network.

“We will be working from Bank Square, working towards Waitrose,” said a spokesman from Electricity North West.

“Lane closures will be in place on Church Street, Swan Street and Hawthorn Lane, with clearly signposted diversions in place.”

Engineers from Electricity North West are replacing five kilometres of underground electricity cables between Alderley and Wilmslow to help power the area for years to come.

The project will replace faulty oil-filled cables which have been in place for around 60 years, with new environmentally-friendly and efficient cables.

An Electricity North West representative spoke about the town centre works at last night’s Wilmslow Town Council meeting, where councillors were told by a Manchester Airport representative that the A538 runway tunnel was due to reopen to traffic on November 15.

An Electricity North West spokesman thanked the public for their patience and support during the work.
