AN iconic red telephone box is to be given a much-needed facelift by Wilmslow Town Council.

The dilapidated phone box is situated on Adlington Road outside The Unicorn pub, one of the gateways to the town.

There is no phone in the box, which is set be repainted and have new glass panels installed to replace acrylic panels which have become clouded.

The paint is being donated by Crown Paints, and the glass panels and frames will cost £825.

The work is to be carried out by the town council’s handyman.

Town councillor Frank McCarthy said: “We are very concerned about the entrances to Wilmslow and the impression they give.

“This telephone box has been looking quite drab and dingy for quite a number of years.”

The town council is also looking to turf the front bed at the car park at Wilmslow Railway Station.

The work is part of an improvement programme costing up to £2,000, which includes clearing the ground and removing conifer trees.

The ground is to be turfed in the short-term, to improve the appearance of the area and allow the town council to consider longer-term options, including possibly installing a tiered planter.

The council is looking at the possibility of creating a new logo to accompany its coat of arms, which Cllr McCarthy said was difficult to read.
