HALF marathon organisers are racing ahead with their new plans for 2018 after winning the backing of Porsche.

Porsche Centre Wilmslow has agreed to be the first sponsor of the Corporate Challenge, a new feature of the Waters Wilmslow Half Marathon.

“The team at Porsche Centre Wilmslow are proud to be supporting the Waters Half Marathon Corporate Challenge,” said Centre Principal Jason Shenton.

“In addition to entering our own team to step up to the challenge and raise money for the Christie Charity, we’ll be looking to help support the event as much as possible on race day.

“A selection of Porsche models will be displayed near the start area with our team available and the supply of a lead car for the race.

“We’re excited to be a part of such a fantastic community event to encourage sport in the Wilmslow area.”

Nick Bishop from the half marathon organising team said: “The Waters Wilmslow Half Marathon was first staged in 1984, and has become an annual event and one of the most popular and prestigious races in the north west.

“It has been voted in the top 10 UK road races by readers of Runners World, and on a number of occasions has been used to host the England AAA Half Marathon Championships.

“We are also staging a ‘Pub Challenge’ along similar lines to the Corporate Challenge - we recognise our local pubs as being part of the community, and are encouraging them to enter teams.

“The aim of the new challenges is to make the race more inclusive within the community, to make the race part of the Wilmslow community and to celebrate all things good about Wilmslow.”

The race has an organising committee from Wilmslow Running Club, Wilmslow Rugby Club and The Phoenix Sports Club.

The race now has charitable status and a Trustee team to ensure the race meets are run in line with the charity status.

The 2018 race is on Sunday, March 18, and five corporate teams have so far signed up.

Next year’s event will feature a Corporate and a Pub Challenge, for which a sponsor is being sought, a merchandise store, 5k to park run programme, pacers and free race photos.

Team Cheadle Hulme School has signed up, along with The Colony HQ, Grant Thornton, Alderley Edge School for Girls and

The Information Commissioners Office, and there have been another six expressions of interest.
