FED-UP parents are calling for action to solve waterlogging at Wilmslow playing fields which has led to football matches being cancelled.

A dad contacted Wilmslow Town Council to express the frustration of parents about the number of games which have been called off at the Jim Evison playing fields off Altrincham Road.

Town clerk Matthew Jackson told town councillors the playing fields were owned by Cheshire East Council, which was working with the Cheshire FA to try to improve such facilities.

He said: “Before Christmas I received an email from a member of the public whose child and their friends were members of football teams that play on Jim Evison playing fields.

“The email expressed the frustration of this member of the public and that of his friends who also go there at the number of games which have been cancelled on the fields this past season.”

Mr Jackson contacted officers at Cheshire East to ask what could be done to improve the situation, something he said the town council would in theory be happy to get involved with.

The issue had been passed to the holder of Section 106 funds at Cheshire East, he added, highlighting the fact that the fields could benefit from such funding.

He had been told by Cheshire East that it was involved with the Cheshire FA in a project to try to improve facilities such as the Jim Evison playing fields in terms of their maintenance.

He added: “They are clearly expressing a desire that they are given the opportunity to try to implement some of these ideas before Cheshire East in the first instance, and perhaps us in support, go to the expense of significant drainage work or alternative pitches.”

Cllr Viveene Brooks was also approached by the parent who had emailed Mr Jackson.

“His son, along with my grandson and a lot of the local boys play for Wilmslow Town,” she said.

“What they find is not only that if it’s raining it’s [Jim Evison playing fields] waterlogged and they have to cancel matches.

“It’s also the fact that Cheshire East is responsible for cutting the grass, and they can turn up for a match and find it’s never been cut and they cannot play because the ball won’t roll. It’s very frustrating all round.”
