A STUDENT from Wilmslow is set to create a storm in the world of geography as she celebrates receiving two unconditional offers to study the subject at university.
Jessica Hewitt, 18, from Wilmslow, is a sixth former at Manchester High School for Girls who has pointed her compass towards Lancaster University, which has offered her a guaranteed place. In addition, she could also receive a generous scholarship if she achieves specified grades in her A-levels.
On the right path to achieve the top grades required, Jessica has already proved she has a head for geographical heights by attaining an A* for her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) – the equivalent of half an A-level, completed through independent research beyond the A-level syllabus.
For her EPQ, the sixth-former did some digging and dished the dirt on the impact of fracking in Lancashire.
Jessica said: “I have an interest in sustainable development and future energy, therefore fracking seemed like a fitting choice for me. It was a challenging project, but I was pleased with the outcome.”
As well as geography, Jessica is currently studying economics and biology at MHSG.
She continued: “I want to read geography at university as I am fascinated how people interact in their respective environments, and how their physical surroundings can have an impact on culture and society. It is a really versatile subject which can lead to various areas of work, and I can’t wait to discover my own path within the field.”
