TESCO Handforth Dean Extra are asking charities to come forward and join them in stopping food waste.

The store has teamed up with FareShare, a food distribution charity, to deliver a new campaign called Community Food Connection, which aims to minimise food waste by offering unsold food to charities and community groups who help feed people in need.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “At the end of each day, supermarkets often have perfectly good food left over that has not sold through on that day. We at Tesco support zero food waste.

“We think it’s simply not right that good food goes to waste. That’s why we have committed that no food that is safe for human consumption will go to waste from our UK retail operations.

“We work hard to minimise the surplus in our stores, for example by reducing-to-clear food that’s close to its expiry date. However, if food cannot be sold, we offer it to charities and community groups who help feed people in need.

“Our Community Food Connection programme, delivered in partnership with UK food distribution charity FareShare, links our stores to local charities and community groups to ensure that no good food goes to waste.”

FareShare is the UK’s largest food redistribution charity and has developed the Community Food Connection in partnership with Tesco.

Stores use the FareShare FoodCloud app to give a daily estimate to charities of how much food is available that evening. The charities then decide whether they want to collect some or all of what’s available.

Tesco Handforth Dean is looking for not-for-profit organisations or community groups that offer food or meals, such as foodbanks or school breakfast clubs, to support the new initiative.

The store is holding a coffee morning so local organisations and charities can find out more at the Community Food Connection and see if they are eligible to sign up.

The coffee morning will be from 10.30am on Tuesday, April 24 at Handforth Dean, Tesco Extra, Kiln Croft Lane, SK9 3PA.
