IMAGINATIVE schoolchildren are being asked to remember heroes from the First World War.

A creative writing and art competition is being run with the British Legion's Every One Remembered project in partnership with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Cllr Bob Rudd, chairman of Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: “The Royal British Legion’s objective is to ensure every fallen hero from across the Commonwealth is remembered individually by those living today.

"Cheshire West can do its part to help remember and I would encourage schools to get behind this important competition to raise awareness among local children of the servicemen and women who gave their lives so they could live theirs.”

Pupils from schools across the borough are invited to write a short commemorative message to say thank you to a serviceman or woman.

The message must be no more than 200 words.

Children can find a specific hero by searching on the national website everyoneremembered.org.

Prizes will be awarded in two age categories.

Younger children are invited to create a picture commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, poppies, servicemen and women.

Entries can be a painting, drawing or collage to a maximum A4 size.

There will be a first, second and third prize.

Winners will be invited to the city of Chester's remembrance service on November 11.

Entries can be emailed to georgia.johnson@cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk.

Children can submit their messages into the national campaign at everyoneremembered.org as well.

The closing date is October 22.
