AN EARTHQUAKE hit Knutsford yesterday, but it appears to have gone unnoticed to members of the public.

The rare event was recorded yesterday (Wednesday) at 8.55am by the British Geoligical Survey.

According to the body's Earthquake Seismology Team, which is the UK's national earthquake monitoring agency, the earthquake is pinpointed to have occurred around the Northwich Road area towards the A556.

It was recorded at magnitude of 1.9, which while relatively low, is the largest earthquake to hit Cheshire since 2013 – also in Knutsford.

According to several sources on the Richter Scale, which is used to measure the force of earthquakes, magnitudes between 0 and 1 are not felt by people, but around 2 on the scale is around the point where some people may feel a tremor.

It appears that Knutsford is something of a hotspot for the occasional earthquake.

The BGS database shows that out of the 17 earthquakes recorded in Cheshire since 2000, seven of those have occurred in the town, with the previous one happening in September 2019, recorded at just 0.1, and the largest in August 2013 recorded at a magnitude of 2.1.
