A GROUP of 37 Vale Royal and Knutsford ramblers joined the coach for the trip to Orton in a less explored part of Cumbria.

The D party, led by Penny Clarke visited the cafe before heading to the Knott and the limestone pavement and returning below Orton Scar after six-and-a-half miles with 700ft of ascent.

Grahame Reid took the C group north past Robin Hood’s grave to Crosby and returned via Gaythorne Plain and Orton Scar to complete 10 miles with 1,200ft of climbing.

Steve Thomas led the B group across Great Asby Scar nature reserve to Great Kettle and back via the jubilee monument after 11-and-a-half miles with 1,500ft of ascent.

The A group led by Rose Chisholm, went via the jubilee monument to Gaythorne Hall and Drybeck and on to Great Asby.

They returned over the limestone pavement to Orton after 14 miles with 1,800ft of climbing.

Most groups returned before the rain started and the tea shops were open so it was an enjoyable day.
