WILMSLOW High School’s senior girls’ tennis team were classified seventh in the country after contesting the national finals at Queenswood School in Hertfordshire.

Olivia French, Ellie Aldrich, Jess Purdy, Laura Jackson and Alice Kraunsoe were playing in the finals for the third consecutive year, winning two matches and losing two over four days of competition.

Not one of the Wilmslow players lost a match to an opponent with a lower rating or ranking in an outstanding team performance.

They beat Bede’s School by five matches to one before falling 4-1 to number two seeds Talbot Heath the next day.

By the end of a titanic six-hour battle Heath proved too strong, winning 4-1.

The lost to Hagley School 4-2 on day three proved decisive.

French was unfortunate to lose that match in three sets and although Purdy won her singles and she and Aldrich won their doubles, the team lost 4-2.

On Saturday, French, Aldrich and Jackson won their singles matches against Holmfirth, and Aldrich and Purdy won their doubles match to win the tie 4-1.
