CHELFORD’S golden couple Jason Kenny and Laura Trott have returned home from an incredible Olympic Games in Rio.

The cyclists won five gold medals in total, making an impressive contribution as Great Britain finished second in the medal table.

Jason’s titles in the men’s keirin, sprint and team sprint events have seen him join Sir Chris Hoy as Britain’s most decorated Olympian of all time, with six golds and one silver medal.

Meanwhile, fiancée Laura has become Britain’s most successful female Olympian, with golds in the women’s omnium and team pursuit bringing her total to four.

Back at their Cheshire home, Jason is glad to be able to relax and walk their dogs, Sprolo and Pringle, and hopes that his life doesn’t change too much following the success.

“I love being at the Olympics, but when you're finished all of a sudden the [athletes'] village seems quite confined,” he said.

“I like my life. I've always felt appreciated, particularly inside British Cycling.”

Laura added: “Jason puts up with so much rubbish on a daily basis from me. He knows me inside out, what to say and when to say it.”

A notable absence from the couple’s home will be five gold medals, with their parents forbidding them to look after them.

"They don't trust us. We are not responsible enough to look after them,” Laura said.

"Maybe when we retire, we'll frame them, put them on the wall,” Jason added.

With their wedding rumoured to be scheduled for next month, the couple don’t have too much time to settle following their Rio experience, although they don’t plan to start preparing for Tokyo 2020 just yet.

Jason said: “It's difficult. You do get the post-race blues.

"If I went back to training next week I'd still be going well and then my form would just get worse and worse and worse, which is just demoralising as a rider.

“So maybe a longer break would be better."

Cllr Rachel Bailey, Cheshire East Council leader, congratulated the couple on their return from Rio.

She said: “We are all very proud of what Laura and Jason have achieved and it is pleasing to see that the hard work they have put in over so many years has been rewarded with these incredible results.

“Their amazing achievements are an inspiration to us all and they are wonderful role models for young people.

“I would also like to pass on my best wishes to Laura and Jason ahead of their wedding next month.”
