WILMSLOW Ladies’ seconds have set their sights on promotion.

This week’s 6-1 victory over their third string indicated a statement of their intent.

They climbed to second place in Cheshire Women’s Hockey League Division Three, level on points with Alderley Edge’s fourths and just two goals behind in the ‘for’ and ‘against’ columns of the league table.

Wilmslow grabbed early control of the weekend’s game and sustained a large amount of possession.

However, a number of attacks broke down in the final stages due to the superb defence of the opposition.

After opening the scoring in the 15th minute there was no stopping them, with two more goals being slotted before half time.

Three more goals were added before the thirds added a consolation effort.

Scorers were Fiona Jeffers, Grace Kerner, Jenna Mapes, Rachel Payne and Jenny Middleton Egan with a brace.

The first team lost 3-0 to Pendle Forest but progressed further in the Cheshire cup with a 3-2 victory over Chester, while the men’s firsts fell 3-1 to Chester.

Wilmslow men’s second team won 5-0 but the under 13s boys lost 5-2 to Southport despite a valiant attempt.
