IN the golfing world, captains and lady captains occasionally take up the position more than once.

However, holding captain’s positions at two separate golf clubs is not something many people can lay claim to.

Now, Wilmslow Golf Club’s new junior captain Hywel Shaw can join that elite band after taking up the prestigious role at the club he has been a junior member of for seven years.

Two years ago, the 16-year-old held the same position at Withington Golf Club and says he is shooting for the stars.

“I would like to see where my dreams take me and you never know,” he said.

“There’s a lot of people to thank, not least Cheshire coach Peter Barber for his assistance and encouragement.

“Martin Wild as well, who has been friend, neighbour, a wise sage and an ear to listen to of many tales of woe! His motivation has been inspirational.”

Hywel has packed a lot into his short golfing career so far and looks set for further glory as his handicap comes down further.

His father Gareth explains the journey his son has taken to this role.

“Hywel had a good look at many sports to see what he enjoyed- he was a good junior tennis player and flirted with golf when he was five,” he said.

“At nine years of age he said to me that he wanted to try golf again so he began in earnest.

“He went to junior lessons with John Nowicki at Wilmslow then to Peter Barber at Didsbury, with whom he still does lessons.

“Hywel joined High Legh for ease of access in 2012 and it is where we live and then joined Withington Golf Club as his friend was Junior Captain.

“He joined Withington for a year and was asked to become their junior Captain at the age of 14- he had been a junior member at Wilmslow from the age of nine and was asked to be their Junior Captain at the age of 15.”

Hywel’s success on the various fairways have led to widespread recognition and he currently represents Cheshire at Under 16 level.

He attends Lymm High School in Warrington and took his GCSEs this year, but it looks as though golf could be his calling.

“His first handicap was 54 when he was 11 and he dropped that season to 42,” his father explains.

“In the following year he went from 42 to 23, then down to 14 and down again to 7.

“His handicap is 4.1 now and his target is to reach three and shoot a round under 70 gross.”

The prodigious talent has won junior tournaments at High Legh and Wilmslow as well as picking up the Captain’s and Lady Captain’s Prize at Withington.

Gareth continues: “He was chosen for Cheshire u14’s and played successfully for them and now represents Cheshire u16’s.

“He got noticed by Cheshire when he shot 83-15-68 in the Cheshire Junior Championship at Runcorn in 2014 and he broke 80 gross for the first time in winning a junior competition at Wilmslow in 2014.

“He won the Junior Masters at Wilmslow, which are for the best four scores in Men’s competitions in 2014, and last year he won both the Captain’s and Lady Captain’s prizes to juniors at Withington with nett scores of 68 and 69.”
