ALDERLEY Edge women's hockey side triumphed in their historic league opener on Saturday.

Following promotion, Edge secured a 2-1 win over Brooklands Poynton's second string in North League Division One – the highest league they have contested.

Brooklands were first on the scoreboard after 11 minutes when their captain Jennie Brown tapped in a deflected penalty corner.

Edge started to control possession with some strong running, width and excellent passing which enabled Ellie Ward to level the score before half time.

The winner came after 50 minutes when Amanda Bennison rounded the keeper and flicked the ball home.

Edge host Newcastle University this weekend.

The seconds won 4-0 at Chester in Cheshire League Division One.

In a physical match, Liv Moores, Caitlin Polley with a penalty flick and Ruby Nelson with a fine solo effort put Edge 3-0 ahead.

Captain Claire Davison rounded things off in the second half from a short corner.

Edge's fifths lost 4-0 to Neston, while the sixths fell 4-2 at Runcorn's seconds. Emma Fluck scored both goals.

The sevenths notched their first win, beating Wilmslow's fourths 4-2.

Edge's men came a cropper 3-1 at home to Whitley Bay & Tynemouth in their opening fixture in North Premier League.

However, the seconds dominated the majority of their game against Preston to claim an important 2-1 win in their opening North League Division One match.

Goals from Joe Coxon and Khalid Sawas gave Alderley a 2-0 lead.

Further chances were not taken and Preston pulled a goal back with three minutes remaining.

The thirds enjoyed a 3-1 home win against Mossley Hill in North West Division Three.

Andy Walker, two, and Oliver Wildig were on the score sheet.

Edge's fourths lost their Division Four game at Liverpool Sefton's seconds 2-1.

The fifths lost their first ever game in Division Four 7-0 at Neston's fourths, but a young sixths came of age in a 4-1 win against a more experienced and physical Lymm thirds.

There were goals galore for the Badgers, who featured in two games at Wilmslow High School.

Their first game ended with a 10-5 victory against Chester, before going down 5-3 to Brooklands Poynton.

With also hosting an Argentinian women's team on part of their UK tour, it has been a busy few days for all at Alderley Edge Hockey Club.
