A FORMER Premier League player is coaching at Wilmslow High School.

Shaun Goater MBE, best known for his five seasons with Manchester City, has been hired to assist the school’s senior football coaches.

The 46-year-old Bermudian striker, who also had stints with Rotherham United, Bristol City, Reading, Southend United, Notts County and Coventry City, is keen to pass on his expertise and top-level experience to Wilmslow’s young talent.

School teams have kicked off their English Schools FA Cup fixtures with mixed fortunes.

The Year 10 boys played host to St Ambrose High of Salford, with the tie going into extra time.

Wilmslow worked hard, dominating the first half and missing a number of good chances which they were eventually made to pay for.

After 70 minutes, with the scores tied at 1-1, the hosts ran out of steam in extra time and conceded a scrappy late goal to lose 2-1.

The Cheshire and Macclesfield and District cup competitions await though, so there is plenty of opportunity for silverware yet.

Wilmslow’s senior boys had no such problems in dispatching St Monica’s High School in their ESFA Cup match.

Some superb football saw them win 3-0 and progress to the next round.

Meanwhile, Wilmslow High School student Jake Turner is following in his footsteps of sister Millie by gaining international recognition at under 18s level.

The 17-year-old Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper is in the England under 18s squad for friendlies against Sweden on Friday and Sunday.
