WILMSLOW High School’s sporting prowess is highlighted in a list that recognises high levels of performance.

School Sport Magazine charts annually the top “sporting” state schools in the country, with Wilmslow High ranked sixth in the latest edition.

An appearance reflects competitive achievement in a range of sports throughout a school year.

“To be recognised on this list once again is a fantastic achievement for the school, PE staff, students and coaches,” said Huw Williams, curriculum team leader for PE and sport at Wilmslow High.

Results are based on participation in 20 sports in more than 120 national competitions.

A high ranking is considered testament to the time and hard work put into extra curricular sport.

Being in the highest 100 equates to a position in the top three percent of sporting state schools in the country, while the leading 30 represents the top one percent.

Across netball, football, rugby union, hockey, tennis, trampolining and cheerleading, the Holly Road North school boasted district, county, regional and national champions in 2015-2016.

In tennis, the senior girls were ranked seventh in the UK and reached the national finals for the third year running.

The trampolining teams were north west champions in seven categories, going on to be crowned top dogs nationally in four of them.

Qualification to the national finals was achieved by the under 14s boys’ hockey side after becoming Cheshire, north west and north champions.

Wilmslow’s under 13s girls’ hockey team were queens of Cheshire and the north west, while the senior girls were Cheshire’s best.

In rugby, the under 15s were Cheshire 7s champions, while the first XV were triumphant in the Cheshire Cup and were NatWest Cup quarter finalists.

The senior football side won 29 of 30 matches, clinching the Cheshire Cup and English Schools FA North West League in a memorable hat-trick of titles.

Wilmslow’s under 16s girls’ outfit were Cheshire’s leading lights, while the boys’ teams were Macclesfield and District champions at under 14s, under 15s, under 16s and senior level.

In netball, the under 12s A, under 12s B and under 13s teams were Macclesfield and District champions, while the under 16s were Cheshire supremos.

The cheerleading level one team were fourth and the level two side were second in the national schools championships.
