Meanwhile, Rob Clarke ended a near 30-year wait to savour success in a Knutsford and District Amateur League competition on Sunday.

The Tatton ace emerged as victor from the Six Reds Challenge at Mobberley, collecting his first title since a maiden victory in the Bert Astles Memorial Pairs in 1987.

Back then, he prevailed with Rob Parkinson while representing Knutsford Cons.

Clarke ended the run of Chris Bushell (Mere A) in the final at the weekend after seeing off Bob Jones (Brook St A) and Mark Bushell (Mere A) at the knockout stage.

A group phase preceded the quarter finals, with three-time winner Tony Crompton (Mobberley A), Chris Bushell, Mark Bushell and Alan Williams (Mobberley D) progressing as victors.

Jones, Clarke, Alec Wright and Will Bushell (both Mere A) completed a line-up for the last eight.
