WILMSLOW Hockey Club’s senior men’s teams are champions!

The firsts sealed the North Men’s League Division Two West title with a 4-2 success at Bebington on Saturday.

And the seconds clinched the Division Four South crown with a 10-0 slating of Alderley Edge’s fifths.

Both triumphs are achieved in style, losing only once in the 19 games they have each played and still having three matches to go.

Rob Turner’s side have lost only one of 19 league games played going into Saturday’s penultimate home game of the campaign at home to Windermere.

Promotion for Rob Turner’s first team, skippered by Martin Wright, was already guaranteed when they headed to Bebington, where they have historically struggled to get a result.

After 10 minutes a penalty stroke was awarded and nerves were settled when Pete Hallinan coolly flicked high into the right of the net.

Things should only have got better for the away side when the Bebington captain was given a straight red card for dissent but the home team lifted and scored two goals on the break in quick succession.  It was not until midway through the second half that Wilmslow equalised.

Steve Edmonds was able to set up Andy Hunt for his 17th goal of the season and then got himself on the score sheet after dribbling the ball past the keeper and pushing into an empty net.

After a fantastic long pass from Martin Wright into the D, Hallinan was able to finish with aplomb through the onrushing keeper’s legs to to claim the league title, sparking wild scenes of jubilation.

In-form Matt Bonner broke the deadlock for the seconds against the Alderley Edge cellar dwellers, finishing neatly from a Paul Hallam pass.

Hallam added a goal of his own before Ric Phieffer made it three.

Wilmslow bagged a fourth with the goal of the game just before half time when Phieffer exchanged passes with captain Roger Eden before the latter glided into the Alderley D and finished superbly.

The floodgates opened in the second half as goals from Phieffer and James Bell put Wilmslow six to the good.

Hallam added a thunderbolt seventh after a weaving run and selfless pass from Jack Wright.

Cam Armstrong and debutant Matt Lewis used all their trickery to help Bonner and Eden bag further goals.

Phieffer finished the scoring for the day with his 33rd goal of the season.

Wilmslow will look to blood a few youngsters in the remaining games, starting with a tricky trip to Neston this weekend.

The men’s third team sit seven points clear at the top of their table, and the men’s fourths are third despite losing 2-1 to Crewe on Saturday.

Wilmslow women’s team beat Prescot 2-0, while the seconds continued their unbeaten record with a 4-0 win against Lymm with goals from Di Law, Fiona Jeffers and two from Hayley Bull.

The thirds lost 5-1 to Oxton despite being 1-0 up in the opening minutes.
