Wilmslow 10 Warrington 8

BOB MacCallum rescued Wilmslow Wolves with a last-gasp penalty as they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Warrington.

Having trailed 8-0 at the break, Ethan Harding’s try brought the hosts to within a point of their visitors in a low-scoring affair at the Memorial Ground.

Warrington’s defence held firm until the final minute when MacCallum booted his side to glory.

The victory was Wolves’ 16th in 21 games this season and keeps them two points clear of Northwich in third place in the North One West table.

The visitors showed the greater urgency early on, with wingers Tom Arnold and Max Caldwell looking threatening.

After Luke Gilooly had opened the scoring with a penalty, Arnold claimed a kick and the ball was shipped along the line to Caldwell and he showed great pace to finish off a well-worked try.

In truth, Wilmslow were fortunate to only be eight points behind at the interval and had solid defence to thank for keeping the score down.

After being read the riot act at half time by skipper MacCallum and coach Rick Jones, the hosts came out firing after the break and Harding’s try finished off a spell of good pressure.

However, they could not break through the Warrington rearguard until the final minute when the visitors were penalised for slowing down the ruck.

MacCallum then kept his cool to win the game for Wolves.
