WORLD record breaking runner Shantelle Gaston-Hird says she received 'incredible' support from spectators in the Wilmslow Half Marathon.

The 29-year-old, who works for ITV, completed the fastest half marathon by a woman - when running backwards - in today's Wimslow race.

She needed to beat 2hrs 46mins over the 13.1-mile course and did so comfortably, recording 2hrs 31mins 50secs gun time.

"The official time from the chip was 2:27.09 so I have to send some information to the record team for them to officially recognise it and receive my certificate," said the former University of Chester student, who hails from Lincolnshire but now lives in Irlam and was contesting the race for the first time.

"It was a lot hillier then what I expected and you 100 per cent feel it more when you are in reverse.

"The wind was a bit of a tough cookie at points to deal with and the pot holes became a bit of a challenge towards the end with tired legs.

"The race was the most supported race I have ever ran. The marshals and locals were incredible.

"The event was very well ran and was really enjoyable.

"Although I saw this race in reverse, I would recommend this event to everyone."

Experienced marathon and ultra-marathon runner Shantelle said during her live interview available to view on the Wilmslow Guardian Facebook page that she was taking on the feat in order to raise awareness of the BulliesOut charity, helping youngsters not to feel alone and to provide help.

Race commentator Andy O'Sullivan MBE concluded: "I have commentated at top road races for over 30 years, this was the most impressive run I have ever witnessed."
