A MAMMOTH secure proved not to be enough for Wilmslow CC as they fell to their first defeat of the season.

After constructing 231 for 5 with an extra over to spare, Prestbury clocked up 233 for 5 to maintain their own unbeaten record and leave the Squirrels in second place in UKFast Cheshire League Division Two ahead of Saturday’s trip to Winnington Park.

In glorious sunshine at the Rectory Field, the hosts put 94 runs on the board before the first wicket fell.

Rob Herriott bowed out, one short of a 50, but there was no rest for the visitors as the top order maintained the momentum.

There was a belligerent 37 from the other opener Jags Narayanan, a classy 56 not out from Ethan Harding and a quickfire 35 smote by Sammar Kung.

It all led to a season-high total for Wilmslow, who, in the opening two weeks had got an early wicket and applied the pressure.

Prestbury provided an entirely different challenge, however, as they too showed an ability to set off like a train.

The home side did get wickets, but the train kept running.

Skipper Jayam Patel was reluctant to blame the bowlers, stating this was the best batting team his side had faced in some time.

Harding had three wickets but saw his figures distorted by 18 coming off a final over, when Wilmslow sought an unlikely victory.
