n Warrington 7

TWO Wolves tries in the last five minutes of this rearranged game under the new floodlights assured Wilmslow of a convincing win.

The victory leaves them fourth in North One West, still battling with Northwich and Blackburn for a play-off position.

Wolves’ defence needed to be clinical in cutting down Warrington’s space in order to prevent their tasty backs from cutting loose.

For the most part, they were just that. Warrington didn’t get many scoring opportunities.

Wilmslow’s strength was in the pack, particularly in the scrum where the front row of Robert Taylor, Alex Donaldson, Jordan Ayrey and young substitute Rhodri Lewis all exerted considerable leverage on their opponents.

The first half was fairly evenly contested.

Tom Bull scooped up the loose ball to swoop for the opening try with just over a minute played.

Bob MacCallum added a penalty and then full-back Elliot Rowe crossed between the posts from close range. On half time, Warrington hit back with a penalty try that gave the visitors their only points in the game.

The second half was nearly all Wilmslow but they didn’t bother the scoreboard man until the closing minutes, mainly because of their own inaccuracy.

Late on though, a MacCallum penalty set up a lineout from which a clean Alex Hewitt catch followed by a controlled drive brought a touchdown from Alex Taylor.

A quick interchange of passing saw Sean Street gallop away for the final try .
