WILMSLOW Golf Club’s new captain Mark Alcroft is a real ‘action man’ and he is looking forward to a hectic year in his new role at the club he has been a member of for 20 years.

His first sporting love was Newcastle United, who he first watched at the age of three on his father’s shoulders and he has a season ticket there for many years.

His son Charlie was a club mascot when Sir Bobby Robson was manager and Alan Shearer was the captain.

Mark still tries to watch them when he can having supported them through many thin years, including losing cup finals, away trips to Europe in the Champions League and he is still dreaming that maybe one day.......!

His other sporting passion, apart from golf, is cricket and he is a past Chairman of Alderley Edge CC and he still turns out for u40’s when they are short.

He is also a member of the MCC and enjoys his annual trips to Lords, he also loves live music, particularly Rock and Blues, and he still attends both large concerts and small intimate gigs.

Combined with his hobbies Mark is still working as an estate agent running and growing a sales and letting business in the North West for Leaders.

He also enjoys travelling as his family has a holiday home in Mallorca where he loves the variety the island has to offer and each time they visit they can’t wait to return.

Mark also enjoys cooking (not clearing up!) and trying different types of wine.

Finally now to his golf!

Mark said: “My current handicap is nine and my best was eight and apart from my own club I love playing in the sun and San Muntaner in Mallorca is my favourite and in the UK I enjoy Parkstone in Dorset and the 2010 at Celtic Manor.

“We have a number of great holes at Wilmslow but without doubt my favourite is the 18th – a fantastic finishing hole which although being a par five there is a danger in each shot yet risk and reward and you are always happy to walk away with a par.

“My own personal highlights in golf are being chosen to be Captain of Wilmslow, getting a hole in one and dropping from 13-handicap to eight in a single season

“I will be supporting the NSPCC as my Captain’s Charity and I have no choice as my wife Helen is on the local committee!

“At Wilmslow we have a fantastic friendly club and this year we celebrate our ladies 125th anniversary, we have for the first time a lady as President and we are hosting in July the England ladies Golf Championship and I am really looking forward to the coming season and the huge action packed diary ahead.

“My chosen players to join me in a four-ball would be Eric Clapton because I have loved his music for many years and I will be off to watch him in Hyde Park later in the year, the late Sir Bobby Robson as I have never met such a sincere, engaging and genuine gentleman and I would have loved to have spent more time with him and finally Tiger Woods as he could play the golf for us all!”
