IT was only the biggest game in Wilmslow Rugby Club's history - and the Wolves left their kit at home!
Salt must have been well and truly rubbed into Driffield's hearts when they lost Saturday's promotion play-off clash in the East Riding of Yorkshire to a side wearing their reserve strip.
Driffield’s compact and attractively laid out ground at Kelleythorpe, about a mile from the town centre, was buzzing when Wolves arrived.
How we broke news of Wilmslow Wolves' promotion victory
How the thrilling closing stages played out in Wolves' favour
The ground was packed all round, people leaning up against the railings and standing on an elevated bank.
The pitch looked grassy and in fine fettle. It was all very agreeable.
Confusion then reigned as a big crowd tried to work out which team was which as Wilmslow emerged from the changing rooms in red, black and white stripes.
The cheers of the crowd as Wilmslow entered the field first suggested some home supporters mistakenly believed them for a moment or two to be the Driffield team.
There was a rather larger cheer when the real Driffield made their appearance in their normal black and white home strip.
Thankfully for Wilmslow, Driffield did not want the afternoon spoilt by a technicality and were gracious in lending the visitors their spare attire.
Had Driffield's second kit not been available, it does not 'bare' thinking about what decisions would have been made regarding the game taking place.
Sports goods shop Newitts would have been happy, with their branding splashed on the front of both sets of shirts on such a big occasion.
