JUNIORS at Styal Golf Club have got off to a flying start in the Cheshire GolfSixes Junior League.

On their home course, the Styal team won the opening round of the competition with four points, beating teams from Mottram Hall, Macclesfield and Congleton.

The format is a six-hole shotgun and teams will play on each other’s courses during the summer months and get into a true team spirit as they get their first taste of competitive golf.

Boys and girls aged from six to 14 are eligible to compete alongside each other and they don’t need to have a handicap.

The juniors were again to the fore in round one of the Styal Junior Summer Series, which was won by Christian Brooker with 23 points.

Isabella Taylor-Stokes (20) was second ahead of Thomas Wooley and Dylan Bennett, who both scored 19.

Another junior star in the shape of Daniel Hayes won Styal’s Sunday stableford with 38 points, three more than the trio of Pat Millat, Joseph Wee and Joey Ousta.

At the other end of the age spectrum, seniors at Styal played a yellow tee stableford, with Brian Donohue emerging victorious with 41 points.

MJ Reddington, Alan Burns and Brian Appleby all finished three points behind Donohue.

Pat Millatt led the way in the latest round of the Styal ladies Summer Cup with 20 points, three ahead of Janice Whalley and Eileen Elliott.

At Alderley Edge, a Thursday 9-hole stableford was won by Steve Bennett with 22 points, two clear of runner-up Sean Hall. Derek Shenton, Michael Davies, Billy Bennett and Olwen Davies were all two points further back.

Edge’s ladies played their Coronation Foursomes qualifier and J Walker and H Edwards won the right to represent the club in next year’s competition.

They posted 35 points to finish three clear of S Freeman and H Williams, with J McGregor and Sue Kendrick a further two points back.
