TWO Styal Golf Club youngsters contributed to a Cheshire victory to cap an unbeaten season.

Sam Hall and Ben Tomlinson picked up wins for the county junior team in an annual mixed age match-up with Lancashire.

The youngsters, aged between 13 and 16, battled on Congleton’s undulating greens, leading to a very fast paced contest and a stiff test of their putting skills.

The weather was hot and with hardly a breeze as the players set off for the morning nine-hole foursomes, which finished with scores tied at three matches each.

Cheshire’s winners included Hall and Tomlinson alongside their partners Jack McCrindle (Prenton) and Niall Curwen (Bramall Park) respectively.

A closely fought series of afternoon singles matches was anticipated, however Cheshire stormed into an early lead.

Hall was one of those tasting victory in the opening five Cheshire wins.

After Lancashire pulled a point back, Tomlinson was among another four Cheshire golfers recording wins in what turned out to be an overall 12-6 success.

The victory also gave the county's young golfers a 'clean-sweep' in 2018, defeating all the neighbouring counties in this mixed-age format.
