WILMSLOW Wolves will head to Vale of Lune on Saturday looking for their first win of the new season.

Rick Jones’ promoted side were beaten at the death in their home opener against Kirkby Lonsdale at the weekend, going down 24-21 in the North Premier encounter.

Wolves did not take advantage of early possession and territorial dominance and paid the price when the visitors went ahead from their first attack after 20 minutes.

A Kirkby penalty attempt from well within range sailed wide before Wilmslow got on the scoreboard as half-time approached, with the converted try seeing them turn around 7-5 to the good.

That advantage was stretched to 14-5 two minutes into the second half but there were plenty of twists to come in this see-saw affair.

The Cumbrians cut the gap to 14-10 five minutes later, with the two conversion misses keeping them behind at this stage.

And then midway through the second period sustained pressure led to Kirkby putting their noses back in front at 17-14.

A Wilmslow response was expected and arrived as the forwards camped deep inside Kirkby territory.

As defenders were eventually forced to condense their width, the ball was silkily handed along the Wilmslow line for evergreen full-back Ben Day to explode through a hole and score what looked set to be the winning try, as it was converted with only minutes still to play.

Wolves did right in trying to run the clock down with a series of picks and drives but strong Kirkby defence forced an infringement and the visitors sealed matters with a try from the final play of the game.
