KNUTSFORD Football Club’s name is already on the oldest amateur football club competition in the world having won it back in 2018.

On Friday, their bid to win it for a second time comes to the crunch as they contest this season’s Cheshire FA Amateur Cup final, which was first played for all the way back in 1886, at Cheadle Town FC’s Park Road Stadium, kick off 7pm.

Their task is a tough one against a Poynton side who currently top the Cheshire Football League’s top flight but having won nine of their 10 matches in all competitions since the turn of the year, Nick Ward’s Knutsford side have reason to be confident.

Their latest success came on Saturday as they won 5-2 at Newton Athletic in CFL League One in what was their first game for three weeks, with bad weather continuing to wreak havoc.

A dominant opening to the game was rewarded by Jimmy Woodward’s opener after 10 minutes as he tapped home after Max Kennedy’s corner fell to him at close range.

The hosts responded with an equaliser just before half time, but the introduction of Daniel Ardern in place of Woodward for the second half proved pivotal in turning the game Knutsford’s way.

After Kennedy had hit the bar direct from a corner, Ardern races onto Steve Jenyon’s flick-on from goalkeeper Dominic Smith’s long kick and swept the ball home to put the visitors back into the lead.

On the hour mark, Ardern was on the mark again to put Knutsford into a position of greater command as he finished well from Rocco Fregapane’s ball into the area.

Skipper Jonny Cavanagh then got in on the act, with a double strike taking his goal tally for the season to 17 and completing a devastating purple patch of four goals in 17 minutes for his side.

First, he drove forward and finished well on 64 minutes before he was in the right place to bundle home another excellent Kennedy corner to put the result beyond all doubt.

Newton drove home a free kick for a consolation goal as the clock ticked over to 90 minutes, but it was too little too late as Knutsford had long since secured a comfortable win.
