Harry Kane’s World Cup hat-trick will dominate the headlines on Monday morning after England enjoyed a sporting weekend to remember.

As well as the Three Lions easing into the knockout stages with a 6-1 hammering of Panama there were plenty of other English achievements to toast.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at the highlights of a strong weekend showing.

After a last-gasp win over Tunisia in their World Cup opener, Gareth Southgate’s side knew a place in the last 16 of the World Cup was within touching distance.

They reached their goal in spectacular style, Kane scoring a hat-trick with John Stones grabbing a brace and Jesse Lingard hitting a fabulous goal.

England led 5-0 at half-time in what will be remembered as one of the best 45 minutes in the history of the national team – and they now face a shoot-out with Belgium to see who will top Group G.

Cricket – England beat Australia – by one wicket

Jos Buttler rescued England as they pulled off a one-wicket win from the most improbable of positions to complete their historic 5-0 whitewash of Australia.

England’s hopes of pulling off a clean sweep appeared all washed up at Old Trafford when they faltered to 114 for eight in pursuit of an under-par 205 all out in the one-day series finale.

But Buttler (110no) – who had already improvised a run-out and stumping in his wicketkeeping role – gave England the last laugh after all in Sunday’s tale of the unexpected.

Rugby Union – England 25 South Africa 10

England’s five-Test losing run came to an end as Owen Farrell marked his first win as captain by kicking six penalties in a 25-10 victory over South Africa at Newlands.

The series had already been surrendered following defeats in Johannesburg and Bloemfontein, but in Cape Town they salvaged some pride with a gutsy display that grew in purpose in the second half.

What started as an ugly spectacle scarred by repeated mistakes eventually developed into a tense climax.

Formula One – Lewis Hamilton wins French Grand Prix

A dominant Hamilton took advantage of Sebastian Vettel’s opening-lap crash with Valtteri Bottas to move back to the summit of the world championship.

The Mercedes man ruled from start to finish on Formula One’s first return to France in a decade to claim his third win of the season and move 14 points clear of Vettel.

Vettel smashed into Bottas’s Mercedes on the 210mph opening-bend charge at the Paul Ricard Circuit, and he was forced to stop for a new front wing.

Golf – Matt Wallace wins BMW International Open

Matt Wallace shot a seven-under-par 65 to eclipse a record-breaking round by Thorbjorn Olesen and claim a one-shot victory at the BMW International Open in Pulheim.

Denmark’s Olesen moved into the lead with an 11-under-par round of 61 only for Wallace, who started the day two shots off the lead, to claw back the deficit.

Wallace was back in the clubhouse by the time Martin Kaymer and Mikko Korhonen failed to equal his final total of 278, both being forced to settle for a share of second place with Olesen.

Rugby League – England 36 New Zealand 18

England fought back from 12-0 down to beat New Zealand 36-18 in their ground-breaking Test match in Denver.

An encouraging crowd of 19,320 at the Mile High Stadium witnessed an impressive fightback from Wayne Bennett’s men, who looked way off the pace in energy-sapping conditions in the opening quarter but finished the game in total control.

Second rower Elliott Whitehead scored two of his side’s six tries while outside backs Jake Connor and Tommy Makinson also got on the scoresheet on debut as the new-look Kiwis were played off the park in the second half.
