Winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 2006, HEROES is a gentle French comedy penned by Gerald Sibleyras and given an elegant English gloss by translator Tom Stoppard.

Set in August 1959 somewhere in France in a home for retired military men, the play takes place outside on a terrace in the garden of a convent hospital where Philippe and Henri are hatching a plan to escape.

Sibleyras himself says that his play is about ‘the universal desire to escape from the confines of your life’.

Our retired veterans are certainly prisoners just as surely if they had been captured by the enemy during the war and although they discuss breaking out, they know they’re going nowhere.

The problem is that they don’t fit in the outside world anymore and indeed cannot exist or survive in it and so make light of the confines of their daily lives in the care home.

Directed by Jill Stringer, Heroes is the Wilmslow Green Room’s first production of the 2018-2019 season and runs from October 20 to 27.
