A PROJECT to restore two town centre war memorials in Winsford has been put on hold to secure further grant funding.

The town council has been working with social enterprise firm Profitts - Investing in Communities to renovate the commemorative monuments.

A design has been chosen after extensive consultation.

Martin Profitt, from Proffits, told members at a council meeting on Monday: "We first thought the work would cost between £60,000 and £70,000 and the Heritage Lottery Fund would be able to fund it.

"Now, we're looking at £12,000 so we hope to apply to the WREN fund. At this juncture we want to put the idea on hold to sort out timescales and fit in with the town centre improvements with CWAC."

He said his company has been working on proposals for the project for the past 12 months.

Mr Profitt said: "We have been consulting with councillors, local schools and local people through various groups in Winsford to guage interest and ideas.

"We have achieved a lot and everything is ready to go."

He suggested it would be advisable for town councillors to liaise with CWAC officers and landscape architect Montague Evans appointed to oversee the town centre improvements.

"We want to make sure that what we put in place complements the improvements."

In the meantime, town mayor Cllr Gina Lewis reassured the community that the war memorials would be "made to look presentable and a lot tidier" in time for Remembrance Sunday on November 11.
