CHESHIRE'S first Jack's supermarket opened in Middlewich this morning.

The doors of the Southway store opened to the public for the first time at 8am this morning.

Crowds were waiting outside eagerly anticipating their first glimpse of the town's new store, which has taken the palce of Tesco, which closed in August.

Jack's is a new budget brand owned by Tesco and named after the supermarket's founder Jack Cohen.

Shoppers were given free drinks on arrival today as staff welcomed them into the store on their first shop in Jack's.

Jane Holt was the store's first shopper to be welcomed, as many more are expected to pass through the doors today.

Matt Eggerton, manager at Jack’s, spoke to the Guardian about Middlewich’s new budget supermarket.

Matt said: “It’s very exciting and a bit nerve wrecking but we were absolutely on the ball and we are very happy to be here and to open this morning.

“We had some of our local councillors in last night and they all seemed really thrilled with the store. They are glad to see us back in the community.

“They all liked the layout and the idea of eight out of 10 products being British.

“We’ve had positive feedback from everyone that’s been in so far."

Jack’s also has an app which allows shoppers to keep check on how much they will be spending before they get to the till, making it easier for shoppers to stick to a budget.

The store also has the ‘When it’s Gone it’s Gone’ (WIGIG) aisle with a variety of items such as TVs, laptops and other household items.

Matt added: “The idea of that aisle is brilliant, we do not know what we are going to get in stock until we see the leaflet when everything comes in so we like the mystery of it.”

Matt also had a message to the people of Middlewich on the opening day.

Matt said: "I want to welcome you all to the store. "We are very happy to be here and happy to be part of the town."

Tesco in Middlewich announced that it would be closing its doors earlier this year in July.

It was confirmed on Monday, October 8 that Jack’s would be opening at the same location in place of the Tesco superstore.
