Nicola said: “I have always wanted to teach craft classes.

“I love working with children and have seen first hand the positive impact of combining stories with art and craft during my teaching experience.

“I wanted to develop a fun and educational programme for children that inspires creativity.

“During the classes children develop skills in painting, drawing, printing, sculpture, paper technology and textiles in a fun and mindful environment.”

Nicola, a former reading leader, uses the STAR approach from the National Literacy Trust to Select, Teach, Activate and Review, tier two vocabulary from books.

She said: “This helps bring words to life and encourages high standards of language, developing the children’s love of literature and promoting creativity.

“Evidence shows that sharing stories and rhymes, especially in a child’s early years, helps children to thrive due to significant brain development.

“I know that children's vocabulary can be expanded tremendously through stories and reading for pleasure, and combining art and craft with vocabulary rich books helps to activate language in children.

“Reading for pleasure prepares children to be enthusiastic and more confident readers in the future.

“It has such a positive impact on a child’s educational attainment and wellbeing.”

Crafternauts classes are specifically tailored for pre-school, infants, and junior aged children.

Sessions can be booked online at crafternauts.co.uk.

Nicola is currently running after school classes at Bexton Primary School for infants and junior children.

Pre-school classes are available on Tuesday morning at Knutsford Methodist Church for children from 18 months to the age of four.
