Wilmslow U3A by Anne Grace

Wilmslow U3A enjoyed two very interesting outings recently. 47 members went on a Mystery Trip and found themselves on the Churnet Valley Steam railway train for a very enjoyable trip from Froghall to Cheddleton and back. They had a very good picnic lunch provided by the ladies at the station together with tea or coffee, all served on the train as they enjoyed the countryside along the way. They went back on the coach and travelled to Buxton. Unfortunately, the weather had turned wet but we they were able to shelter in the Pavilion and partake of a welcome cup of tea before heading back to Wilmslow.

About 40 members of the science group headed for the Anson Engine Museum the following week and where they were treated to a most interesting talk about the history and development of the museum. They were given a tour of some of the engines with an explanation of engines ranging from steam engines to internal combustion engines, up to and including a modern Bentley W12.

Janet Bradshaw was the guest speaker for the meeting with a fascinating talk about sweets and memories associated with them. She included many amusing poems and anecdotes. She works at the Old Hall at Tatton and her talk developed following an exhibition there a few years ago. Members thoroughly enjoyed her talk and learnt a lot about sweets from cave men times to the present day.
