SAM Hall's best efforts were in vain as his county side lost.

The Styal Golf Club junior and his Cheshire teammate Bradley Snape from Romiley showed fighting spirit as the county squared up with Derbyshire under 14s and under 16s counterparts on a challenging course at Macclesfield Golf Club.

Results of the morning 10-hole foursomes led to the visitors gaining a 3-1 lead that proved vital to the final result.

It was all to play for in the eight singles matches and Derbyshire extended their lead with a win and a half in the opening two games.

But Hall and Snape got Cheshire back in contention before the visitors went on to win 6.5-5.5.

Alderley Edge’s men were in good form in a monthly medal as Jan Cichocki topped division one with 63 ahead of Mark Walker, 65, and Steven Yakub and Nigel Featherstone, both 67.

In division two Peter Burns posted 66 one less than Andrew Boyle.

A betterball stableford for Edge’s women was won at a canter by A Roberts and J Pratt with 40 points, four more than H Williams and S Freeman.

Styal Seniors played for the Memorial Trophy and in a close finish Alan Burns won a card play-off on 67 from Howard Dickson, just a shot clear of David Wrigley and Ted Marsden.

It also needed a cpo on 40 points in a Styal Wednesday stableford to see Khalil Musa on top from John McBryer and Ken Mayoh.

The latest round of the Styal Ladies Summer Cup was led in by Gayle Blackburn with 21 points, two more than Hilary Boyce.
